About the project

Yiddish Multimedia Corpus was developed within the framework of the project No. 14-05-0074 “Developing and using corpus instruments for the study of Yiddish” funded by the Science fund of the National Research University Higher School of Economics in 2014.

All recordings have been transcribed in YIVO transliteration and normalized according to the standard phonetics of the literary language. The corpus contains the following texts whose transcription was a part of the project No. 14-05-0074:

• Transcriptions of lectures in the Lithuanian dialect kindly provided by the Jewish Community Center of St. Petersburg (2012)
  1. Shmuel Bunim. Colony of Eastern European Jews in France between the World Wars
  2. Maria Rolnikaitė. The most interesting encounters in my life: Avrom Sutskever, Ilya Erenburg and others
• Recordings of folklore interviews in the Ukrainian dialects from the archives of the Center for Biblical and Jewish Studies (2007–2010 )
  1. Interview with a couple from Chernivtsi about cuisine, wedding, and name giving
  2. Interview with a woman from Chernivtsi
  3. Interview with sisters from Chernivtsi about children folklore
  4. Interview with a woman from Chernivtsi about cuisine, dances, and wedding
  5. Interview with a man from Chernivtsi about wedding and music

The corpus also contains field recordings made in 2012. The transcription of these recordings was supported by the Corpus program of the Russian Academy of Sciences:

1. Interview with a woman from Orhei
2. Interview with a woman from Bălţi about her childhood
3. Interview with a couple from Rîbnița
